📙 Gamma-ray astronomy by Ramana Murthy P.V., Wolfendale A.W. — download pdf

This book is a fully updated new edition of the authors' earlier volume published in 1986, which covers both the background science and the current state of the art in the field of gamma ray astronomy. The emphasis is on the astronomy and astrophysics of known sources of cosmic gamma-rays outside the solar system. The authors discuss the mechanisms for the production and absorption of gamma-rays. The gamma-ray line astronomy of the interstellar medium, galactic center, and various discrete sources is then considered. Gamma-ray bursts are treated in considerable detail in chapter three, and the final two chapters describe medium energy and ultra-high energy gamma-rays. Relevant data from supernova SN1987A is also included in this edition. The concentration on phenomenology makes this book a fine introduction to gamma-ray astronomy.

Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy
Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy download pdf by T.C. Weekes

High energy gamma-ray photons are the prime probes of the relativistic or high-energy universe, populated by black holes, neutron stars, supernovae, quasars, and matter-antimatter annihilations. Through studying the gamma-ray sky, astrophysicists are able...

Biggest Bangs: The Mystery of Gamma-Ray Bursts, the Most Violent Explosions in the Universe
Biggest Bangs: The Mystery of Gamma-Ray Bursts, the Most Violent Explosions in the Universe download pdf by Jonathan I. Katz

Gamma-ray bursts are the most violent events since the birth of the universe. They are about ten times more energetic than the most powerful supernovae. At their peak, gamma-ray bursts are the brightest objects in space, about 100,000 times brighter than ...

X-ray Detectors in Astronomy
X-ray Detectors in Astronomy epub download by Fraser G.W.

First published in 1989, this book provides a comprehensive review of the detection techniques that are used in X-ray astronomy. Since the first discovery of a cosmic X-ray source in 1962, there has been rapid growth in X-ray astronomy, which has largely ...

Compact stellar X-ray sources
Compact stellar X-ray sources download pdf by Lewin W.H.G., van der Klis M. (eds.)

Algol is a triple system containing a 70 hr eclipsing binary (K IV and B8 V) in a 694 day orbit with an A V star. The X-ray emission from this system (Schnopper et al 1976) is thought to be associated with a corona surrounding the lobe filling and synchro...

Energy Budget in the High Energy Universe
Energy Budget in the High Energy Universe free pdf by Katsuhiko Sato, Hisano Junji

The existence of materials with very high specific energies greatly exceeding the local virial temperature is best represented by cosmic rays, whose origin has long been a mystery. Recent astrophysical observations in X-ray, gamma-ray, neutrino, and high ...

Cosmic explosions in three dimensions
Cosmic explosions in three dimensions download pdf by Hoeflich P., Kumar P., Wheeler J.C. (eds.)

Recent observations have demonstrated that supernovae and gamma ray bursts are driven by strong jets of energy and other asymmetrical effects that reveal unknown physical properties. This volume highlights the burgeoning era of routine supernova polarimet...
